Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has won the West Virginia primary - his second consecutive victory in the race for the nomination for the White House.

With more than 90% of polls reporting, the senator had 51.3% of the vote to Hillary Clinton's 36%.

However, with the 29 delegates from the state to be divided on a proportional basis, Sanders will still be well behind his rival in the overall delegate count.

Donald Trump cruised to victory in the Republican vote in West Virginia, as well as yesterday's other Republican primary in Nebraska.

The businessman was uncontested after his remaining rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich bowed out of the race last week.

In a fundraising email sent after his latest victory, Mr Sanders said, “there is nothing I would like more than to take on and defeat Donald Trump, someone who must never become president of this country.

"But I believe that it is not enough to just reject Trump – this is an opportunity to define a progressive vision for America," he added.
