Yuichiro Miura conquered Mount Everest in the early hours of this morning. It marks the third time Miura has broken the record, having previously scaled Everest in both 2003 and 2008.

Miura is no stranger to unique Everest and climbing achievements. He was also the first person to ski on the mountain in May 1970.

He is part of a lineage of mountaineers started by his late father Keizo (a well-known skier who also became the oldest person to climb Kilimanjaro at 77 years of age) and continuing with Yuichiro’s son Gouta.

Yuichiro has overtaken climber Min Bahadur Sherchan's previous record. Sherchan, from Nepal, was 76 when he claimed the title for oldest Everest climber from Miura in 2008.

However the Nepalese climber, now 81, will continue fuelling the Himalayan rivalry when he attempts to tackle the mountain again next week.

Last year, Japanese climber Tamae Watanabe became the oldest woman to summit Everest at the age of 73.
