The US Congress is set to approve the release of $120m in additional funding to cover the cost of protecting both Donald Trump's family and Trump Tower in New York where his wife Melania and his youngest son Barron are based.

According to The New York Times, half of this money will be given to the US Secret Service to protect the US President while travelling and to secure Trump Tower.

The other $60m will be used to reimburse local authorities in New York City and Palm Beach County in Florida who faced "extraordinary law enforcement personnel costs," protecting Trump properties since he was elected.

This money will only cover the next five months until the US fiscal year ends.

Some $23m is set to be spent protecting Trump Tower and to rent space in the building.

According to the news outlet, the total cost of securing the sky scrapper is $127,000 to $145,000 per day. Mr Turmp has not been back to the Manhattan property since his inauguration in January.

Protecting his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Springs costs $60,000 per day when Mr Trump stays there.

$50m is also being spent reinforcing the fence along the White House's boundaries.

The US Secret Service spends $750m per annum providing security services for the US President and other top politicians.
