Daniel Kinahan will likely be segregated from other prisoners having been remanded in custody on a charge of directing the activities of a criminal organisation.
Kinahan returned to Ireland after a decade via a Government jet, following a successful extradition case from the United Arab Emirates, and appeared in front of the Special Criminal Court on Sunday evening.
Kinahan is expected to appear again before the court on October 5th.
On The Claire Byrne Show, Conor Lally, Crime and Security Editor with the Irish Times, said there was “quite a large security operation” as Kinahan appeared before the Special Criminal Court.
This included “armed Gardaí from some of the specialist Garda units… [and] people from the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.”
Kinahan appeared before the court “for about a quarter of an hour,” appearing without legal representation – with Kinahan claiming he “had no time to get legal representation in place in Ireland,” according to Mr. Lally.
Mr. Lally said Kinahan “spoke quite a bit,” which Mr. Lally thought was unusual for people appearing before the Special Criminal Court.

Kinahan is due to appear again before the Special Criminal Court on October 5th with him expected to “get a legal team in place before then.”
Mr. Lally then expects a series of brief procedural hearings to “tie down details of how a plea could happen or how a trial could take place.”
However, a trial is not expected “until the spring of next year at the very least,” according to Mr. Lally.
Segregation
After the hearing, Kinahan was transferred to the maximum-security Portlaoise Prison where he “will be segregated away” from other prisoners.
A landing in the prison, which typically houses eight inmates, has been cleared for Kinahan’s detention, with gym facilities and a library available to him.
Mr. Lally expects Kinahan will be “locked in his cell [for] maybe 20 hours a day,” but that “he can have visits in person, and he can also have video calls.”
