On this day in 1742, an architect who would come to define an age in Irish history was born.

There are traces of his work dotted across the country - from the Custom House to the Four Courts and Kings Inns - to other works found in Laois and Waterford.

But despite coming to represent a 'Golden Age', James Gandon was not without his critics; there were riots against his first building, and he fled the country when revolution came.
