The US President has again warned the UK that he doesn’t want to see Brexit lead to a ‘closed border’ on the island of Ireland.

Joe Biden made the comments during a meeting with British prime minister, Boris Johnson, in the White House yesterday.

The UK Government continues to seek major changes to the Northern Ireland protocol – which prevents the return of a hard border in Ireland.

The DUP has criticised the arrangement as it does so by carrying out checks on goods travelling from Britain to Northern Ireland.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Mr Biden said a new trade deal with the UK is “continuing to be discussed” but warned that he “feels very strongly” on the Northern Ireland protocol.

“We spent an enormous amount of time and effort in the United States [on the peace process],” he said.

“It was a major bipartisan effort made and I would not at all like to see – nor I might add would my Republican colleagues like to see – a change in the Irish accords with the end result having a closed border again.”

The EU has warned that the protocol cannot be renegotiated; however, it is committed to fixing any “practical problems” that people and businesses are facing in Ireland because of Brexit.

It said it aims to solve any outstanding issues by the end of the year.
