Unless something drastic happens, Bolton Wanderers and Bury will go out of business.

Bolton were in the Premier League as recently as 2012 but have been on a downward spiral since then financially and also on the pitch.

Meanwhile, Bury have been unable to fulfill a single League One fixture in their 135th year of existence.

Preston-born Kevin Kilbane grew up in the region and shared his reaction to the potential of two storied clubs.

Tough side under Allardyce

"It's just terribly sad when you see what's happening there at Bury and Bolton as well, given that Bolton were a Premier League team five or six years ago," he said.

"Playing against Bolton, they were a tough side to play against under Allardyce. They were one of these clubs that you almost think, 'Yeah, they're a Premier League club now, they're established'.

"Did they overpay on wages? I'd probably say yes. How much money has come out of the club? Are we going to get any clarity as to why this has happened?

"Because it simply shouldn't have happened. Yes, the parachute payments have run out and they have been out of the Premier League now for five years. That's by the by. Every club knows that.

"But you've got to adjust your pay within your club as well in accordance with that.

"They're two sides where you can't believe the way that it's gone, given their status within the EFL. Watching Preston as a kid, I remember Bury and Bolton coming to town. Big games and big derbies, they've been for Preston when I was a young lad. It's extremely sad."
