Jim Goodwin looks set to be appointed the new Aberdeen manager after being granted permission to speak to the Dons by his current employers St Mirren.

The Waterford native has emerged as the front-runner to succeed Stephen Glass, with Paul Lambert and Jack Ross also linked with the vacancy in recent days.

It's believed that St Mirren would receive around 300,000 pounds in compensation if Aberdeen appoint Goodwin, who took the club to two cup semi-finals last season.

"This is an opportunity that Jim wishes to explore and the club has granted the manager permission to speak to Aberdeen regarding this position. We hope for a swift resolution to this matter," Saint Mirren confirmed in a statement this afternoon.

Aberdeen announced that talks will now take place and that "we will make a formal announcement when the process to secure a new manager is complete."

Barry Robson will take caretaker charge of Aberdeen for their clash with Motherwell tomorrow while it's unlikely that Goodwin will be in the Saint Mirren dugout for their game against Livinsgton.
