Dublin has been ranked the 4th richest city in the world.

Despite our economic woes we have tied with Copenhagen in the United Nations Habitat Index.

5 markers have been used to decide where cities place on prosperity.

They are productivity, quality of life, infrastructure, environment and equity.

Vienna came first in the index, followed by Helsinki in Finland and Oslo in Norway.

'Beyond just economic emphasis'

Overall, UN Habitat suggests a fresh approach to prosperity beyond "the solely economic emphasis, including other vital dimensions such as quality of life, adequate infrastructures, equity and environmental sustainability".

The report advocates for the need of cities to enhance the public realm, expand public goods and consolidate rights to the 'commons' for all as a way to expand prosperity.

This comes in response to an observed trend - the UN says - of enclosing or restricting these goods and commons in small groups of prosperity, or reducing them through unsustainable use.
