Ireland and Leinster player Rob Kearney has confirmed that he has agreed an extension to his IRFU contract, but has yet to put pen to paper on the deal.

The experienced full-back’s current deal is due to expire after the Rugby World Cup this autumn.

That led to speculation about the 33-year-old's future, including mooted interest from French clubs.

However, Kearney has been speaking to Off The Ball’s Joe Molloy today and confirmed that he has agreed a one-year IRFU extension which will keep him at Leinster.

Speculation

"I get nine months extension - then we will take it from there after that," said Kearney of his deal with the province.

"Were you sitting in on the meeting?! Were you a bug?" Kearney joked as to the likely terse back-and-forth between Kearney and David Nucifora about their respective positions.

"It's quite simplistic. It is probably exactly as you would imagine it would go, with dialogue back and forth.

"I suppose I have been very lucky that I can be a bit factual about [making my case for a contract], but part of the sticking point was nine months, versus a two-year contract, so I suppose that is where a little bit of a delay was."

As to who prevailed in negotiations, it appears that both parties left somewhat satisfied. Kearney had to weigh up family and living commitments as he looked at his potential options, and appears to have opted for staying in the country instead of earning more in foreign climes.

"[Money] wasn't the most important thing for me this time round. There was playing in finals, your best friends," said Kearney of the reasons behind his decision to stay with Leinster.
