Met Éireann has issued a snow & ice warning for Ireland.

The status yellow warning advises that showers of snow are expected overnight and on Tuesday morning.

Forecasters say some accumulations of 1-3cm are likely, but that could increase on hills & mountains in the western half of the country.

Met Éireann is also warning that there could be some dangerous driving conditions, as road temperatures are likely to 'be close to freezing or below'.

The warning is valid from 8pm tonight until midday tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Road Safety Authority, meanwhile, is reminding drivers to watch out for 'black ice'; to slow down in snowy & icy conditions; and to clear all snow from vehicles before commencing a journey.

"Clear your windows and mirrors before you set out, carry a screen scraper and de-icer," the authority suggests. "Do not use hot water on the windscreen as it can crack the glass."

It also advises pedestrians & cyclists to wear high visibility clothing, and to be careful when approaching roads or footpaths covered in snow or ice.
