People on social welfare will be able to earn up to €14,000 renting out a room in their home under a new Government plan.
The move will allow means-tested welfare recipients to earn the money without it affecting their payments.
Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys is hoping the changes will help ease the housing crisis and open more properties to Ukrainian refugees.
The Irish Times reports that the Government is also considering an update to ensure elderly people can still access the Living Alone Allowance if they rent out a room.
People who are working are already able to earn €14,000 tax-free by renting out a room under Revenue’s Rent-a-Room scheme.
It comes after the Government this week confirmed a €400 ‘Recognition Payment’ for people who take in Ukrainian refugees.
The monthly payment is exempt from tax and is excluded from social welfare means testing.
