The Grow with Aldi supplier development programme is back for 2020. Small and medium sized Irish suppliers have the opportunity to get their product stocked in 140 Aldi stores nationwide with the supermarket investing €500,000 into the campaign.

One of the producers hoping to get her original recipe hot sauce on the shelves is Maeve O’Malley from Galway. Maeve joined Pat Kenny on the show to showcase Meltdown Hot Stuff – a robust sauce made from Irish apples and habanero peppers. The versatility of the sauce means it can be enjoyed in soups, pasta dishes and sandwiches. Maeve told Pat that her dad even enjoys it on his oysters!

Maeve is no stranger to the food industry. Her first venture was a seasonal café ‘The Tiny Teapot’ which she ran from her family’s holiday home in Cleggan from 2011 – 2013. She then pursued her cheffing qualification in GMIT.

The inspiration for the hot sauce came whilst Maeve was running two pop-up cafes, Meltdown, in Dublin – the original located in Temple Bar and a second premises on Leeson Street. Maeve recognised the niche in the market and had the ideal platform to perfect her product. Maeve tells Pat “I was able to put the sauce on tables. I had the customer base. I was able to do tastings and get feedback’. After six months of testing she was happy she had the recipe nailed.

Maeve is excited to be part of the Grow with Aldi programme and feels she has already benefited from advice from the supermarket’s product development team. She’s hoping that Meltdown Hot Stuff will be one of the five products chosen to hit Aldi shelves nationwide this May
