Firefighters have brought a blaze under control at a former hotel in Roosky Co. Leitrim that had been earmarked as a direct provision centre for asylum seekers.

The fire broke out at approximately 8 pm on Thursday night at the Shannon Key West Hotel

No one was injured in the blaze, which caused road closures in the village.

The government had previously earmarked the building to be converted into accommodation for asylum seekers.

This led to some local people expressing concerns that facilities in the village would be unable to cope with the influx of new residents.

It also saw a legal row breaking out over the ownership of the hotel.

The issue was resolved before Christmas when an agreement was reached to develop a four-star hotel on the site.

Gardai remain at the scene this morning which has been sealed of for a technical exam.
