Irish band The Coronas are hoping to whip up support for their new album by setting off on a tour with a difference this bank holiday weekend.

The Dublin group’s latest album ‘Light Me Up’ is out this week; however, the usual tours and talk-shows are off the menu this time around due to the coronavirus outbreak.

On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, lead singer Danny O’Reilly said they have come up with a cool new way to build up a buzz for their music.

“We couldn’t do any launch gigs; we couldn’t do any in-store signings, record store signings – we can’t even come to you in Marconi House and do any performances really,” he said.

“So, our manager had the bright idea of hiring an ice-cream van for the weekend and we are going to travel around Ireland.

“We are going to sell the new album and just create a bit of promo so it is going to be fun few days.”

He said the band has spent the last week trying to get the van to play their music in that classic “chimey” style.

“It took a team of surgeons working on it day and night and finally we have a few of our songs just to replace the usual Match of the Day theme tune when the ice-cream van comes along,” he said.

“When we actually pull up, we are going to stop doing those annoying chimes and play the actual album through the speakers.”

He said fans will also be greeted by the band’s manager decked out in the “full ice-cream man gear.”

“We found a lovely top hat for him and a stripy apron thing so it is the finer details,” he said. “We also got the ice cream van wrapped in the album artwork and it looks amazing; it has really turned out well so I am really looking forward to it.”
