A woman has been airlifted to hospital with head injuries after slipping on steep ground at Dublin's Howth Head.

The woman was winched to safety after slipping and falling nearly ten metres at Balscadden.

The Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 was called to the scene alongside the RNLI Lifeboat from Howth, the National Ambulance Service and paramedics from Dublin Fire Brigade.

Howth Coast Guard spokesman Fergus Cooney said the woman appears to have gotten into difficulty after leaving the main path on the Howth Walkway.

"The first response team arrived and quickly got down to the lady and established she had a fall of probably about nine or ten metres and had sustained a head injury," he said.

"They got the patient stabilised; Dublin Fire Brigade paramedic was brought in as well by lifeboat - he provided advanced care.

"The helicopter winch-man got down to her; got the patient transferred into the stretcher and she was taken over to Beaumont Hospital."

He said hikers on the walkway should always try to stay on the main path.

"Stick to that path the whole way around and you will be OK," he said. "But when you do deviate away from the main path, some of the conditions are quite treacherous."

"Indeed if people see other members of the public they think might be getting into trouble, make that call straight away - dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

Gardaí said they attended the scene at around 12:20pm following reports that a woman had injured herself in an apparent fall.

They said the extent of the woman's injuries are currently unknown and their investigations are ongoing.
