Proposed new laws on so-called 'Z drugs' are not an attack on drug addicts, according to Health Minister Simon Harris.

The Misuse of Drugs Act targets prescription sedatives, which are often openly dealt on city streets.

It is hoped these new laws will help in the fight against gangland crime.

If passed, the act will outlaw dealing of so-called 'Z drugs'.

A second drugs act, including legislation on controversial injection rooms, is due after the summer recess.

Minister Harris says the legislation targets gangland crime, which has blighted the capital in recent months.

While Tánaiste and Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald hopes the legislation will stamp out street dealing.
