An 11-year-old boy has been seriously injured after impaling himself on an iron pole erected as part of preparations for the Irish Open golf championship in Portstewart.
Ryan Patez suffered a four inch wound through his thigh at a children's play area in Portstewart, according to The Belfast Telegraph.
The paper reports that the young boy fell backwards off a wall onto a un-capped iron rod erected to mark out a temporary car park for the golf championship.
The rods were placed in the playing fields by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council to cater for overspill parking spaces.
There were no cars in the area at the time.
Ryan is currently recovering at home - however his mother Natalie Patez told BBC Northern Ireland that she is seeking legal advice following what she called a "totally preventable" accident.
A spokesperson for Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council confirmed that a young boy had been injured at the Warren park and ride in Portstewart on Wednesday afternoon.
"He was treated in hospital for a leg injury and was subsequently released later that evening," said the spokesperson.
"An officer from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and a representative from The European Tour’s car park operation visited the boy at home on Thursday where he is recovering."
