The longest glass bridge in the world has been closed less than two weeks after it opened - reportedly because it has been overwhelmed with visitors.

The bridge across Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon in China opened on August 20th.

More than 8,000 people a day have been crossing the bridge - but demand is said to be around ten times that capacity.

Management say the temporary closure is due to a 'software and hardware problem'.

However, a spokesperson told CNN that "we're overwhelmed by the volume of visitors".

He stressed that there have been no problems or accidents on the bridge, and the glass has not cracked.

The bridge across the canyon is around 430 metres long and around 300 metres above the ground.

The picturesque area is said to have been an inspiration for some of the landscapes seen in the film Avatar.
