The trial of a woman accused of stabbing her ex-boyfriend to death in December 2015 has heard she told gardaí she was acting in self-defence.

Michal Rejmer's body was found in the back garden of a house he shared with Monika Matracka at The Pines, Briarfield, Castletroy in Limerick.

The jurors heard from several people who used to work with Mr Rejmer at McDonalds in Castletroy.

They described him as a lovely guy who enjoyed athletics.

One of them said he was a "proud member of Dooneen Running Club".

They all said it was unusual when he did not show up for work in the days that followed his shift on December 30th, 2015.

He was reported missing a week later - and his body was found in his back garden on January 9th last year.

He had been stabbed to death.

The court heard he had been living with his ex-girlfriend Ms Matracka, who had told gardaí she had not seen him since the day before New Year's Eve.

On the day his body was found, she admitted killing him but said she acted in self-defence after he came into her room with a knife demanding money.

Her trial is expected to take up to three weeks.
