A woman in her 90s has died following a road traffic collision in County Roscommon.

Gardaí said a car was found crashed in a deep ditch on the side of the road around 3km outside of Castleplunket at 12:45pm this afternoon.

The body of a woman in her 90s was discovered in the vehicle. Gardaí said she had been reported missing yesterday after she failed to return home from an appointment.

Gardaí said there was no other vehicle involved in the crash.

The woman’s body has been removed to University College Hospital Galway where a post mortem examination will take place.

The stretch of roadway, located between Castleplunket and Ballintubber, is currently closed as gardaí conduct a forensic examination.
