International vigils are taking place to mark the fifth anniversary of the death of Savita Halappanavar.

The Coalition to Repeal the 8th Amendment is organising the Dublin vigil. The group says it will be a silent event with no speeches.

People attending are being asked to bring a candle or a flower to the GPO on O'Connell Street at 4.00pm.

Members of the public are also invited to join events at more than 20 other locations around Ireland.

This includes events in Cork, Galway, Donegal Belfast, Kerry and Limerick.

Vigils are also taking place in London and New York.

Savita Halappanavar

Ms Halappanavar died in University Hospital Galway (UHG) from septicaemia.

She had been miscarrying and asked for a termination, but had been told it was not possible.

A HIQA report in 2013 found a fundamental failure in her care.

HIQA also identified a number of missed opportunities to intervene which, if they had been acted upon, may have resulted in a different outcome.

HIQA said at the time it was clear that UHG did not have effective clinical arrangements in place to ensure regular monitoring was done.
