As of today, Ulster Bank customers can pay for items using their Android phone.

Android Pay was first introduced in Ireland back in December of last year. At the time of launch, it was only available to AIB and KBC customers.

From today, those with Ulster Bank can set up a card for Android Pay. To do so:

  • Open the Android Pay app on your device. You may need to download it from Google Play Store.
  • Select + to add your card and billing address details
  • Accept the terms and conditions
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your card
  • Once your card is verified, you are ready to use Android Pay.

Speaking about the arrival of the technology to Ulster Bank, the bank's Director of Customer Experience and Products Maeve McMahon said:

"Android Pay is a great way for our customers to quickly, easily and securely make a purchase with just a tap of their mobile. The way in which our customers bank with us is changing radically. In 2016, 62% of customer interactions were digital. We saw a 22% increase in active users of our mobile app and our ‘Get Cash’ facility was used over 2,000 times a week.”

Security

Google has approached its mobile payments technology with multi-layered security. The payment information is fully encrypted and constantly monitored for malware and fraud. At no time does Google share your card's 16-digit card number with merchants nor is it stored on your phone.

Android Device Manager will help you find, lock, and erase your phone if it is lost or stolen. Also, you can simply search “Find my phone” and Google will show you where it is on a map. Since your payment information is never stored on the phone, there’s no need to cancel your credit or debit card.
