A medical expert has told the trial of an Offaly GP accused of killing her severely disabled daughter that she was “devoted” to her.
Bernadette Scully has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of her 11-year-old Emily Barut at their home at Emvale, Bachelor’s Walk in Tullamore in 2012.
She is accused of doing so through an act of gross negligence involving the administration of an excessive dose of the sedative, Chloral hydrate.
The defence closed their case this afternoon with Noreen Roche, a health and safety expert with over 40 years experience, was the final witness.
Ms Roche carried out of an assessment of Emily in 2009 - she said she was totally dependent for all her needs and required 24 hour one to one care.
She described her case as one of the most profound she’d ever come across and praised her mother for the quality of care she provided.
She was asked about Chloral hydrate and said she knew it was used for seizure control as a last resort - and had been prescribed to Emily.
