Traveller families with 28 children prepare for eviction from Dublin site

Officials from South Dublin County Council have this morning moved on to a halting site where five Traveller families are set to be evicted.

The extended families include 28 children.

They are due to be evicted from the old school site in Balgaddy, Lucan by council officials.

The site has no electricity, toilets or running water.

The council has said the families agreed before Christmas that they would leave today – however they are disputing the claim.

Martin Doherty, who lives on the site with his family, said they have nowhere to go.

“All we want – we are not looking for Dallas or Beverly Hills – we are just looking for a little bit of a hard stand that we can move into with a sup of water and a bit of electricity for the time being,” he said.

“Yes, we will leave this morning; we will move away if they have a place to put us into.

“But we can’t go out on the side of the road with kids. Where can we go to?”

South Dublin County Council has said it has no “duty of care” to the families because they are not from the county area.
