The Evening Top 5: Body found in Kildare woods, Hawe family laid to rest in Cavan

Hundreds of people gathered in Castlerahan, Co Cavan, to pay their respects to the Hawe family, who were found dead at their home on Monday.

Mourners gathered at St Mary's Church to pay their respects to Alan and Clodagh Hawe and their three sons - Liam age 13, Niall 11 and 6 year old Ryan who died in an apparent murder-suicide.

The family were buried together in the adjoining ceremony.


Gardaí are investigating the discovery of a body in a wood in Co Kildare.

The man’s body was discovered in Rahin Woods on Friday evening.

The body was removed to Naas General Hospital and the State Pathologist is carrying out a post mortem.

It is believed the body may be that of 24-year-old Philip Finnegan who was last seen at his home in Dublin on August 10th.


The ASTI teachers union says they will hold two separate ballots on industrial action.

Secondary school will be balloted on industrial action, up to and including strike action, over new teachers' pay. If teachers vote in favour of strike action it could result in school closures this autumn.

The union represents 18,000 teachers - more than half of all second-level teachers.


The Austrian chancellor has suggested that sausage and Viennese coffee stands pay more taxes in Austria than multinational companies.

Christian Kern of the centre-left Social Democratic Party spoke to Der Standard newspaper after the European Commission found that Apple's tax deal with Ireland was illegal under EU state aid rules.

Mr Kern said: "Every Viennese cafe, each [sausage stand] pays more taxes in Austria than a multinational group. That goes for Starbucks, Amazon and other companies.”


Firearms and ammunition have been in found in Co Wicklow.

They were discovered during a search of wasteland in the Ballywaltrim area of Bray on Friday.

The firearms have been taken to the Forensic Science Laboratory for ballistic examination.

Gardaí say there have been no arrests at this stage but investigations are ongoing.
