A teenage girl is in a critical condition in hospital after four teenagers were swept off the coast at Hook Head in Wexford yesterday afternoon.

They were part of a scouting troop from Dublin.

Two managed to swim ashore and two others were rescued by the Waterford based Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 117.

The two teenagers are in hospital and one boy has minor injuries while the girl is said to be in a critical condition.

The Director of the Irish Coastguard, Chris Reynolds, says it was a difficult rescue operation.

Scouting Ireland says it will carry out a "thorough review of its protocols and procedures" after the incident. The organisation says it is providing support to the 14 scouts and their leaders and says the welfare and safety of their members is of 'paramount importance.'
