A teenager has been arrested in the UK along with a 20-year-old woman as they allegedly tried to travel to Syria.

The 16-year-old and the woman were detained in central London at around 9pm last night.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said both were arrested "on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts, namely traveling to Syria to join a proscribed organisation".

They were taken to a central London police station.

Earlier this month, it was reported that east London schoolgirl Kadiza Sultana had been killed by an airstrike in Islamic State's Syrian stronghold of Raqqa.

The 17-year-old was one of three teenage girls who left London together in February last year, reaching Syria via Turkey.

Shamima Begum and Amira Abase were both 15 when they left Bethnal Green with Kadiza, all three reportedly marrying foreign IS fighters soon after they arrived.

There were 36 women arrested as part of counter-terrorism investigations in the year ending March 2016, a record number.
