The Taoiseach has said he is not ruling out a public inquiry into the death of a cyclist killed in a hit-and-run incident five years ago.
It follows a meeting earlier today between Enda Kenny and the family of Shane O'Farrell (23), who was killed on 2nd August 2011 near Carrickmacross in County Monaghan.
The driver of the car - Zigimantas Gridzuiska of Lithuania - was convicted of dangerous driving.
He was later given an eight-month jail sentence, suspended on condition that he leave the country.
The O'Farrell family has already made several complaints to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) alleging multiple Garda failures in the handling of the case.
In a statement this evening, the Taoiseach said he had received a 'powerful presentation' from the O'Farrells - Lucia, Jim and their four daughters - highlighting issues which he said warrant further consideration.
Enda Kenny said: "I am not ruling out a public inquiry, but I would first like to receive the report of the GSOC investigation into aspects of this case, which I understand it to be at an advanced stage under the chairmanship of Justice Ring."
The O'Farrell family, meanwhile, hailed it as a 'positive step towards justice for Shane'.
They said in a statement: "It was a positive meeting where the family discussed the failures of the Gardai before Shane's death and the irregularities in the prosecution following it. The Taoiseach stated that he was concerned with the documents he saw."
