Sinn Féin is promising to abolish student fees, reduce class sizes and pay all teachers the same, if the party is elected to government.

The party also wants to increase the amount of resource-teaching hours and funding for Special Needs Assistants.

Sinn Féin plans to get rid of third level fees over the five years of a Sinn Féin led government, and to prioritise low to middle income teaching staff in future pay negotiations with unions.

As part of its education policies, the party would also undertake a survey of the current school system, to ensure there are enough buildings and teachers to bring the student-teacher ratio from 27-to-1 to 20-to-1.

The party's Education Spokesperson, Jonathan O'Brien, says the party would seek meetings with teachers' unions to bring about a system where all teachers are paid the same:
