A fathers' rights campaigner has interrupted the live TV broadcast of the Rose of Tralee.

The founder of the British-based Fathers 4 Justice group, Matt O'Connor, disrupted the Cavan Rose's appearance as he stormed on stage.

The separated fathers' rights group claimed responsibility for the stage invasion on Twitter.

In a statement, it added that the intrusion aimed to "highlight [the thousands] of fathers and children affected by family breakdown in Ireland".

Mr O'Connor, who was dressed as a priest, referred to "all the fathers in this country denied access to their children" as he held a poster on stage.

The 49-year-old London resident founded Fathers 4 Justice after a difficult divorce left him struggling to secure access to his two children.

The group is known for its high-profile stunts, often carried out by men in costumes.

The Rose of Tralee broadcast cut to ads for several minutes while Mr O'Connor was removed.
