Police in Scotland are treating a fire at Edinburgh Central Mosque as a hate crime.

The door to the building was damaged after an object was thrown at it in the early hours of this morning.

Officers say no one was injured - and the consequences could have been far worse had the fire taken hold and spread.

Police in the city have launched an investigation following the incident.

Chief Inspector Mark Rennie, local area commander for South East Edinburgh, said: "This was a despicable and reckless act, which we are treating as a hate crime.

“We have launched a thorough investigation to identify anyone involved," he added.
