Police in the North have found an item of interest during the exhumation of the body of Daniel Rooney.

The teenager was shot dead in the St James Crescent area of west Belfast in 1972.

His body has now been removed from Milltown Cemetery in the Falls Road area.

The object of interest found has been submitted for further forensic testing.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness, quoted by BBC, said: "We are continuing to liaise with the family in relation to this and will keep them informed of any further developments."

The PSNI yesterday announced it would be exhuming the body as part of an investigation connected to the activities of the Military Reaction Force (MRF) - a British army unit operating in Belfast in the early 1970s.

The Press Association reports that detectives are investigating allegations that the unit carried out "random and unjustified shootings" during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
