An Oxford historian has been found stabbed to death by his cleaner in what police have described as a 'vicious and sustained attack.'

Adrian Greenwood (42) was pronounced dead when he was found in his home in London at around 3pm on Thursday. Police say that a post-mortem examination found that he died from multiple stab wounds to the chest and neck.

Formal identification is yet to take place but police in London are satisfied that the man was Mr Greenwood, a biographer, author and a dealer of art, cars and historical artefacts.

A man in his 20's has been arrested on suspicion of the murder and is currently being detained by police. Meanwhile, police are still looking for the weapon used in the killing.

A representative of the Thames Valley police said:

"We believe that an altercation has taken place in the hallway of this house. The post-mortem confirmed that Mr Greenwood died following a vicious and sustained attack."
