An Irishman who died during an attempted suicide bomb attack near Mosul did not kill anyone else according to the Iraqi forces.

Terence Edward Kelly, also known as Abu Osama Al-Irlandi, was blown up by an anti-tank rocket on Friday.

The so called Islamic State group had claimed that Kelly, who was originally from the Liberties in Dublin, had killed and injured “dozens” of Iraqi forces from the Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Units (PMU).

The Department of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday that it is working to clarify the Islamic State claims.

On Sunday, a spokesman for the PMU said the Irishman’s attack had not killed any of his intended targets - although a number of troops were injured by flying shrapnel from the blast.

The 49-year-old converted to Islam 16 years ago and was referred to by Islamic State as Abu Osama Al-Irlandi.

Over the weekend, ISIS Twitter accounts posted a picture of the man holding the device allegedly used in the attack.

Kelly was known to Gardaí and was questioned and released by Special Branch officers in 2015.
