NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered the most remote galaxy ever seen from Earth - 13.4 billion light years away.

Known as GN-z11, the constellation of stars is among the first that formed in the universe, 400 million years after the Big Bang.

It is the most distant object ever seen in the known universe and appears darkish red in a fuzzy image.

The Hubble team has broken the cosmic distance record with the discovery.

The animation above shows the location of galaxy GN-z11, as it existed 13.4 billion years in the past, just 400 million years after the big bang.
