The hacker group Anonymous claims that NASA is on the verge of discovering alien life.

A video, released on a YouTube channel affiliated with the group, claims that a NASA scientist made the announcement at the most recent meeting of the US Science, Space and Technology committee.

The group claims many other planets throughout the universe "probably hosted intelligent life long before Earth did".

"The evidence sure seems to imply that something is going on in the skies above.

"It would cost a lot for spaceships and a continuous flow of taxes and black budget dollars could imply a rational that there is more than meets the eye and or that of public knowledge," the group says.

It comes after NASA's Kepler space observatory discovered 219 'potential new worlds' in other solar systems.

The findings by the Kepler telescope do not mean that the planets have life, just that the basic requirements for life have been met.

The video has almost 900,000 views.

"Professor Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters in Washington, said our civilisation is on the verge of discovering evidence of alien life in the cosmos.

"'We are on the verge of making one of the most profound, unprecedented discoveries in history, said Zurbuchen'", a masked man in the video says.
