Men who are worried they might abuse children, are taking part in a groundbreaking study to sample drugs intended for prostate cancer patients in order to assess if they can reduce sex drive.

These drugs naturally reduce levels of testosterone and are globally used to suppress urges in people who have already been prosecuted as sex offenders. But the purpose of this study is to extend the use of the medication to men in the general population who fear that they might sexually abuse children.

The participants in the study were recruited after contacting a Swedish helpline for those who think they can't control their sexual urges.

As part of the drug therapy, the study aims to uncover substances in a person's blood or brain patterns in order to identify individuals who are vulnerable to committing sexual crimes. The researchers say that if these substances are found, they will progress their work by using the drugs to conduct public screening for pedophiles.

According to those operating this study, 'one in 10 boys and one in 20 girls' are sexually abused during childhood.

Anders* who is involved in the research of this study, explains the objectives of this study:

''Hopefully it will take my mind off these things or help take my mind off it so I don't have to be so frustrated and miserable.''
