Mazda has just released images of their all-new Mazda2. This will incorporate their SKYACTIV technology and KODO design – both of which have proven successful for the brand through their most recent models (Mazda6, Mazda3, etc.).

The all-new supermini, according to Mazda, will offer better performance, safety and fuel economy than the outgoing Mazda2. It will also be brought up-to-date in terms of technologies used within the car itself. The car will feature the manufacturer’s MZD Connect (their in-car connectivity system).

Mazda are hoping that this car will be a real-contender in the B segment, which accounts for 22% of the European passenger car market at the moment. A lot of purchasers look for reliability and style when buying a new car, and because of their stylish KODO design the new Mazda2 should be a real contender in this market.

The wheelbase of the car has been made slightly longer (80mm) and the overhangs are smaller – these changes should result in more space for passengers and according and then it should also enhance stability. The A-pillars have been pushed back towards the rear, while the height has been left relatively unchanged. The all-new Mazda2 will also be the first Mazda to don full LED headlights in a four-lamp design. Mazda tells us that this system, along with their automatic High Beam Control should deliver better night vision.

The MZD Connect will allow drivers stay connected through their iPhone and Android smartphones. The system will allow them to connect to a free mobile content app called Aha. This will allow drivers connect to thousands of stations from across the world. It will also allow you to listen to your Twitter and Facebook feeds. The car also supports iPod, MP3 and the usual CD player and radio is present. A nice touch is that the car has SMS and readout functions.

There will be a range of engines available with the Mazda2. Most notably is the all-new lightweight SKYACTIV-D 1.5 common-rail clean diesel engine. We’re informed that it offers 105hp and 220Nm torque at 1,400-3,200rpm. Mazda tells us that this engine will burn only 89 g/km of CO2 and in terms of fuel consumption their own in-house figures indicates a combined consumption of 3.4l/100km.

Other engines include the SKYACTIV-G 1.5 (115hp, 4.9l/100 km & 115g/km), SKYACTIVE-G 1.5(90hp, 4.8l/100km & 112g/km or 4.5l/100km & 105g/km – depending on transmission) and SKYACTIV-G 1.5 (75hp, 4.7l/100km & 110g/km).

Prices for the all-new Mazda2 will start from €15,995.
