A man who was jailed for 10 years for raping a 14-year-old girl in Westmeath has moved to appeal both his conviction and his sentence.

Martin Stokes, from Corkhill in Kinnegad, forced her to have sex with him in a field after meeting her on a road in June 2011.

He claimed it was consensual and even suggested she was an "enthusiastic" participant.

His appeal is based on a number of grounds, including the admissibility of selected clips from videos of his interviews with gardaí.

Stokes maintains the clips were shown to the jury to portray him in a bad light.

He claims he was mistreated while in custody, saying gardaí shouted at him and failed to record everything he said during his interviews.

He has also raised concerns about the judge's final address to the jurors.
