A man has been found guilty of murdering 20-year-old Joseph Dunne in Naas, Co. Kildare in May 2014.

Zoltan Almasi of Harbour View in Naas had denied hitting Mr Dunne across the head with a baseball bat.

Just before the jurors began their deliberations on Monday, they were told they could return one of three verdicts: not guilty, guilty of murder or not guilty of murder but guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

And after considering all the evidence for over eleven hours, they returned this afternoon and found Zoltan Almasi guilty of murder by a majority verdict.

During his trial, the court heard he admitted grabbing a baseball bat and chasing a group of men away from his home after seeing them hitting and jumping on his van.

Mr. Dunne’s friends said he’d been drinking and was in a bad mood when he hit the van, but insisted he only hit it once.

A post mortem revealed the 20-year-old died from a blunt force trauma to the head, but Mr. Almasi repeatedly denied hitting him with the bat.

He will be handed the mandatory life sentence for murder when he’s brought back before the court next Wednesday.
