A man has been arrested following an 'incident of criminal damage' at the barrier-free tolling point on the M50.

Gardaí say the incident occurred at around 9.30pm last night when a man is said to have gained access to the gantry barrier.

The M50 was closed for a short time as negotiators spoke to the man.

Following the incident, a 48-year-old man was arrested and taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station.

He is due in court in Dublin city centre today charged in connection with the incident.

Images shared on social media appeared to show wires on the overhead tag readers had been cut, while the Irish Times reports that the tolling system on the northbound lane remains broken today.

In a statement, toll operators said: "Transport Infrastructure Ireland and eFlow would like to thank the Emergency Services for their assistance with this unusual event and are relieved that nobody was hurt.

"eFlow engineering and maintenance personnel are currently on site to assess and repair any damage and to prevent any possible similar incidents occurring again."
