Gardaí investigating the murder of two people in north Dublin on Wednesday have recovered a firearm.

A major manhunt is underway in the capital after a mother of six, aged in her 40s, and a man in his 30s were gunned down on Balbutcher Drive in Ballymun.

The woman has been named locally as Antoinette Corbally.

Eyewitness reports say two men in balaclavas walked up to a house and fired a number of shots.

It has been reported that the target of the of the attack was a known criminal who escaped injury. It is believed he was holding a toddler at the time of the attack.

Two other people have been receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and a child also received minor injuries.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on the bodies of the two victims.

Gardaí are trying to track the movements of two cars they believe were used in the attack - a silver Opel Safira with an '08 LS' reg, and a Volkswagen Golf GTI with an '06 LH' reg.

On Wednesday, Chief Superintendent Lorraine Wheatley – who is leading the investigation - appealed for anyone with information come forward:

People in the locality have voiced their horror at the killings – however a number said they were not surprised.

One neighbour said she was among the first people on the scene of the shooting – and tried in vain to save the man's life:

“I said well listen, I will help – because he had three shots to him, I could see the bullet wounds,” she said.

“So I tried to revive him back, just keep him going.

“And then the police came and I kept them going and going and going.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Noeleen Reilly, who lives in nearby Poppintree, said she could hardly believe what was unfolding:

“I suppose just shock and concern,” she said.

“It is absolutely devastating that this has happened in our community and two lives have been lost and obviously my thoughts go out to the familes of the victims.

“It is just awful, awful news that something like this could happen in broad daylight.”

In a statement last night, the Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan condemned the shooting.

“This outrageous attack is totally unacceptable and I utterly deplore this shooting which has tragically resulted in the loss of two lives as well as others injured,” he said.

"These ruthless people have no regard for human life and this will not be tolerated."

Anyone who was in the area between 3.00pm and 4.00pm on Wednesday is being asked to contact Ballymun garda station on 01-666-4400.
