The Health Service Executive (HSE) wants to use the results of a new survey on the sexual habits of gay men to help stop the spread of HIV.

According to the health authority, for the past two years homosexual men accounted for the highest number of new HIV diagnoses in Ireland, at 46%.

And it claims research is vital to help reverse the trend.

The survey goes live online today at misi.ie - where a questionnaire can be filled out by any homosexual man living in Ireland over the age of 18.

The National Survey for Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) in Ireland is a cross-sectoral partnership of organisations, NGOs and voluntary organisations working in the area of HIV prevention and sexual health.

The survey asks about relationships, sex life, behaviours, risks and precautions, and use of health services - and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

The last survey of this type was carried out in Ireland in 2010, as part of the European MSM Internet Survey (EMIS).

The findings were used in planning and developing the HSE and Gay Health Network (GHN) Man2Man.ie programme, and also informed the development of Ireland's first and forthcoming National Sexual Health Strategy.

Dr Derval Igoe is a specialist in public health medicine with the HSE. She says answers will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

She says the last study of this kind gave some good insights.
