Irish man Kevin Mallon is due to appear in a Rio court today in connection with allegations of ticket touting.

The THG Sports director was released on bail from Bangu Prison in the early hours of yesterday morning under strict conditions - including an 8pm curfew.

He is banned from any Olympic or Paralympic venues, and must also alert authorities as to his whereabouts.

Brazilian police claim Mr Mallon was found in possession of more than 800 tickets and was attempting to sell them. He denies any wrongdoing.

THG Sports earlier released a statement welcoming the decision to release Mr Mallon.

"We will continue to work to secure Kevin’s full release and his return to Dublin," the firm said.

"THG is providing full support to Kevin and his family and will continue to seek to ensure their privacy at this difficult time."

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan is to meet the family of Pat Hickey to discuss concerns about his detention in Brazil.

The president of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) temporarily stepped down following his arrest in connection with the alleged illegal re-sale of Rio 2016 tickets.

Journalist with the Independent.ie Cathal McMahon, who is in Rio, says it's still unclear what will happen at the court appearance.
