The Tánaiste and Labour leader says the party is ready for the General Election and has a good story to tell.

Joan Burton is preparing for the party's annual conference in Mullingar today - the last of the parties to hold such an event before the election is called next week.

Last night Labour announced its tax plans - with PRSI cuts for those earning up to €36,000 and abolishing USC for those earning up to €72,000.

The Labour leader says she believes voters will support the party when they see what the alternatives are.

She added people are increasingly telling her they "want to see the recovery continue. We want to see more employment and more investment in health, education, services, roads and our public transport network":

Speaking to reporters in Mullingar, the Environment Minister said the election should take place on a Friday.

Alan Kelly - who legally issues the polling order - says there will be no row with Fine Gael on the issue.

It follows speculation that Enda Kenny may be in favour of holding the election on Thursday February 25th.

Minister Kelly says he believes the Cabinet will agree on the date, but believes "elections should always be on a Friday".

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin said the party's proposed tax cuts plan will only account for a quarter of the money that will be available to the next government.

"The total tax proposals we were going to make was just under €3bn, that's out of a fiscal space of about €12bn. So about €9bn on expenditure and about €3bn on taxation reductions," he said.
