An Irishman has been stabbed in the Algarve area of Portugal.

It is understood the man was taken to hospital on Sunday after receiving stab wounds during an attack.

The Irish Times reports the incident took place at the Praia da Rocha resort near Portimao.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says its aware of the case and stands ready to provide consular assistance
