The LÉ Samuel Beckett has located and rescued some 50 migrants from a rubber vessel in the Mediterranean.

The operation followed a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre last night.

A search and rescue operation took place 25 nautical miles north-west of Tripoli.

The operation began at 8.05pm and all migrants were taken on board LÉ Samuel Beckett by 10.20pm.

The rescued persons have now been transferred to the NGO vessel Bourbon Argos.

This brings to 2,310 the number of migrants rescued by the LÉ Samuel Beckett since it deployed to the area in September.

These figures are provisional until confirmed by the Italian authorities.

The Defence Forces say the vessel is awaiting further tasks in the area of operations.
