An Irish man has drowned in The Netherlands after reportedly getting into difficulty in the water.

The 28-year-old man has been named locally as Alan Lucid from Ballyheigue in Co Kerry.

It happened in Egmond aan Zee in northern Holland at around 4.00am on Thursday.

He was attending an international science conference.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family.
