The Iranian Foreign Minister has slammed Donald Trump's statement on yesterday's attacks in Tehran as "repugnant".

At least 13 people were killed and dozens others wounded when gunmen and suicide bombers targeted the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of Ruhollah Khomeini, the country's first supreme leader.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the pair of deadly attacks.

In a statement released by the White House, President Trump said: "We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times."

However, the statement also adds: "We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote."

Tweeting after yesterday's attacks, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iranians reject "US claims of friendship":

His tweet referred to the vote by US senators yesterday to move forward with a bill to impose new sanctions on Iran "in relation to Iran's ballistic missile program, support for acts of international terrorism, and violations of human rights".

President Trump has adopted a hardline stance towards Iran, despite the improved relations between the two countries following the 2015 nuclear deal.

Despite the criticism, the Trump administration earlier this year renewed sanction relief for Iran as part of the 2015 deal.
